Bioshock is one of the best games you'll ever play in your life; it is by far the most innovative and skilled shooter game in recent history. You must have read the reviews, you must have read the world rave about it, but this is one thing you have to experience. Words can't even begin to describe the journey that is Bioshock. This game - apart from being just a game - also tells us a very compelling story, one that will mesmerize you. Read on.
Bioshock starts off with a bang, and unfortunately, the player is a part of it: you're in a major plane crash, which you miraculously survive. After you revive from the effects of the crash you see a lighthouse and you swim toward it. There you see a bathysphere terminus. Your character - Jack - intrigued, uses it and discovers "Rapture". The game is based in the year 1960 and is a twisted tale of a man named Andrew Ryan, who, abandoning the world above, creates a city called Rapture under the sea. He wants to create a new world, void of the ills that men on the surface possess. You're introduced to Rapture in the bathysphere by an audio log that's recorded by Andrew. While you're transported, you see this magnificent city underwater, this world under the sea.
As soon as your transport docks, you see a dark room and a man walking backwards in your direction. Moments later an oddly shaped figure rips the man apart using strange contraptions that appear to be his hand. This creature then eyes you and jumps toward the bathysphere. You hear a man asking you to pick up the radio set that is inside the bathysphere. The man introduces himself as Atlas and asks you to remain clam. After a few futile attempts to dent the sphere, the creature leaves you. The man introduces you to Rapture and tell you that he'll help you survive in that underwater city - a once glorious city, now turned into a battlefield. The plot is very complex ... but I don't want to give away too much - apart from a few things that you must know.
A major aspect of the story is Adam - not another character but a substance. Adam was discovered by the scientists of Rapture - scientists who had the freedom to experiment beyond boundaries. Adam was discovered in a particular species of sea slugs. And with Adam one could genetically enhance any human ability. But with such an awesome power, things are bound to go out of hand - and they do. The city turns into a bloody mess of disfigured humans, who kill each other and act like mindless zombies.
The most unique characters in the game are the Little Sisters and their Big Daddies. Now, this isn't some rock band or a group, or drag queens, neither are they names that couples give each other during intimacy in Rapture. The Little Sisters are little girls that are armed with a big device that they use to suck Adam out of the dead citizens of Rapture. And Big Daddies are the sisters' bodyguards. Let me elaborate a little: after the discovery of Adam, almost every citizen had their bodies enhanced. Not the Pamela Anderson of Bay Watch type enhancements: there are more like Jean Claude Van Damme in Universal Solider type enhancements. These enhancements - called Plasimds - give you abilities like telekinesis, and the power to instantly freeze or ignite anyone. So these Little Sisters go around the city colleting Adam out of dead citizens. The big daddies look like huge guys in diving suits.
The plot is really twisted and creepy, but it's well executed.
Gameplay
Hacking
Other Abilities
There are other abilities as well that you can use, including properties that make you stronger to physical attacks, and some that make you better at hacking. You can buy all these abilities with money that you salvage from dead enemies and safes.
Adam
Every level has up to 3-4 Little Sisters. You can harvest or rescuethem to retrieve Adam from them. First you've to kill the Big Daddies - which isn't at all easy, even at the easiest difficulty. You can harvest them; or you can kill them and retrieve more Adam; or save them and get less Adam. The collected Adam can be used to buy more abilities.
Weapons
There are many weapons - all of which can be customized to suit your needs. There are pistols, rocket launchers, machine guns, crossbows, and so on. Every weapon can be upgraded via a special power-to-the-people booth, which can be found (but rarely) throughout the game. The weapons are effective enough to eliminate the various enemy types.
Plasmids
Being very useful, these special abilities dominate the combat. You can freeze enemies, burn or electrocute them, throw them away with telekinesis, use a tornado to throw them in the air - and so on. You've many abilities, which you use to eliminate enemies as well as get through tough situations. There are abilities that let you control a Big Daddy to fight for you as well for a short while. These make the game great fun to play.
AI
Graphics'n'Sound
The game uses the Unreal 3 engine, which basically translates into jaw-dropping visuals and great level design. The game looks better than any other FPS game released this year and as good as any other Xbox 360 title. The sound effects are amazing and creep you out at regular intervals. I especially like the soundtrack, which features classic songs, including "If I Didn't Care", made famous by Shawshank Redemption.
Final Verdict
The game will make you a part of the character in the story and make you feel his pain. Remember how close you felt to Oliver when you read Dickens' Oliver Twist for the first time in school, or watched Oskar Schindler in Schindler's list? Bioshock's transition is similar, if not better. The game lasts over 15 hours in gameplay. So go out and buy a copy today - or miss out on a great game!
