I am not a technical expert (as you might have gathered) and thus this
section probably stretches my technical knowledge as far as it goes.
The critical issue, though, is that most individuals and companies that
operate Web sites leave the security of that site to the hosting provider,
which is evidently a mistaken reliance, as the provider will not get
attacked or defrauded, you will! Thus you must consider:
Can your data be accessible to other users of the Web server?
Are the external and internal firewalls of the Web hosting
company configured correctly so that an attack can be recognized
and responded to?
Does the Web hosting company continuously monitor (and act
upon) information about vulnerabilities?
What tools does the Web hosting company use to monitor their
network?
What levels of physical security does the Web hosting company
have? Online security is pointless if an attacker can get to your
Web site easily from the premises of the company.
Does your Web hosting company have clearly defined policies,
procedures and standards for digital security? Do you get a copy
of such documents?
