Smallest Color Laser Printers; Samsung Claims

Samsung Korea has announced two new color laser printers; CLP-315K and CLX-3175FNK, claimed to be the world's smallest color laser printers.

The CLP-315K is 20 percent smaller than its predecessor CLP-300, Samsung claims. The features of the printer include a resolution of 2,400 x 600 dpi, 32MB of internal memory, and printing speed of 16 pages per minute for black prints and 4 pages per minute for color prints. It generates a noise level of only 45dBA while printing, the company claims.
The other printer, the CLX-3175GNK, can also be called a three-in-one device; meaning in addition to print, it also offers scan and fax functions. Samsung claims it is 40 percent smaller in comparison to the previous model CLX-3160. The CLX-3175GNK allows users to save scanned documents directly to a USB drive, and read documents from a USB drive to print, eliminating the need for a PC.

There is no information yet on availability of these printers in Korea or any other market, and no news on pricing either. We can only hope that like other products, these printers too will eventually find their way to the Indian market.

Motorola Unveils MotoYuva W270

Motorola has today launched the next iteration of MotoYuva, MotoYuva W270.

MotoYuva W270 is optimized for music; it comes with an inbuilt MP3 player, integrated stereo FM radio with RDS support, and dedicated MP3 and FM keys. Even with the flip closed, the clam-shell designed phone offers keys to play and stop, adjust music volume, and change FM channels and MP3 music tracks. The phone enjoys T-Flash Card support up to 2GB for the user to carry his/her favorite songs. The battery makes for a talk time of up to 550 minutes and a standby of 450 hours, Motorola claims. Other salient features include a 128 x 128 pixels 65,000 color display; GPRS class 10 support for fast Web browsing and downloading, USB 1.1 support, ability to sync with Windows Media Player version 11 and later, and CrystalTalk technology for reducing ambient noise.
Add-ons include: Hinglish predictive text software, wallpapers and screensavers, games such as Sudoku and Tetris, currency converter, calculator, and calendar.

The MotoYuva W270 is immediately available pan-India at all Motostores and retailers. Along with a 256MB microSD card, USB cable, and stereo headset, the W270 comes for a MRP of Rs 3,360. Here's hoping this Yuva doesn't attract the cribs its predecessors have!

WinZip Announces WinZip 11.2

WinZip Computing, a Corel company, has announced availability of WinZip 11.2, an updated version of its file compression software.

WinZip 11.2 integrates the Zip format's newly-added Unicode support, promising accurate rendering of international characters in file names when using the same Zip file on computers with different code pages; a feature that was missing in earlier versions. With the new version, users can create and share Zip files with confidence that international characters will appear correctly regardless of code page of the recipient's PC

In addition to Unicode support, WinZip 11.2 adds built-in support for the LHA compression standard popular in Japan; this allows users to create, open, and extract LHA archives (.LHA), eliminating the need for third-party LHA software. WinZip 11.2 comes with Windows Vista Certification, offering Vista-style tool bars and program icons, a Vista Explorer-style user interface, and support for 64-bit Windows Vista and XP as well as 32-bit Windows Vista, XP, and 2000. Other features of WinZip 11.2 include: automated compression method selection; viewing thumbnails within WinZip without extracting files or launching a separate application; and zipping and sending email directly from the File menu using the "Send To" option.

Along with WinZip 11.2, the company has also released WinZip 11.2 Pro with some new features including data backup with enhanced job wizard, full size image view, and send to FTP or CD/DVD. With enhanced job wizard, users can create zip "jobs" that identify the what, where, when, and how of virtually any data backup. Users can program job wizard to FTP, burn to disk, or email the resulting Zip file automatically as part of the data backup procedure. Users can also view full-size images with the internal image viewer without having to extract the image from the Zip file.

WinZip 11.2 is available online for $29.95, and WinZip 11.2 Pro for $49.95. Registered users of WinZip 11.0 and 11.1 can get the new version as free update, while users of WinZip 10 or earlier will be charged 50 percent off of the new license price for the upgrade.

Lenovo 11 Inches Ideapad Coming to India

Lenovo's Ideapad U110, which is just 11-inches wide and weighing 2.4 pounds, is all set to come to India by the second week of May. The laptop was showcased at the 2008 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) held in Las Vegas earlier this year. Ideapad U110 marks Lenovo's entry into ultra-portable notebooks, and comes with an Intel Core 2 Duo 1.6 GHz processor, 120GB hard drive, 2GB RAM, Intel's GMA X3100 integrated graphics chipset, Ethernet and Wi-Fi support, and Windows Vista Home Premium. Lenovo claims that the laptop's standard four-cell battery will run it for about 2 hours, while the 7-cell battery (included) will add another 6 hours to the laptop's life. The U110 comes with four speakers and a sub-woofer and Dolby sound, and an integrated camera with face-recognition software. Lenovo has also included an external dual-layer DVD burner as standard equipment with the laptop. The IdeaPad U110 has a frame-less screen and extends to the edges of the lid. The notebook is available in either red or black and is priced starting at Rs 80,000

Windows XP SP3 Delayed, Vista SP1 Paused

On two separate occasions yesterday, Microsoft announced a delay in the release of Windows XP Service Pack 3, and later pronounced stopping of automatic updates for Windows Vista Service Pack 1 as well. The delay in XP SP3 and stoppage of Vista SP1 were both attributed by the company to the same problem -- a compatibility issue, although no further details were disclosed. However, Microsoft confirmed that due to this problem, Microsoft Dynamics Retail Management System would not be able to work with either operating system update. While Windows XP SP3 was originally slated for release yesterday, Windows Vista SP1 was released only last week. The stoppage of automatic updates for Vista SP1 is only temporary, Microsoft said. The company regrets the inconvenience caused to customers but maintains that it is only in their best interests ultimately. Fixes for these problems are claimed to be currently in testing, and would be made available as soon as the process is complete.
